Google Nexus 6 -- A bigger phone with more everything

The Nexus 6 was indeed developed with Motorola, as per the rumours, and as per Google’s promotional material it does look a lot like a large Moto X 2014 edition. Google describes it as having a “contoured aluminium frame” and a “6-inch Quad HD display”, while imaging duties are handled by a 13MP camera (with f/2.0 aperture), and audio comes from dual front-facing stereo speakers. Google also teased the “Turbo Charger” Qi charging stand which can allegedly give you six hours of juice after a 15 minute top-up – the battery is a 3,220mAh setup.
Google has now officially confirmed the date for when the world’s first batch of punters will get their hands on Android Lollipop – November 3. In a note to developers, The Big G said that it’d probably be a good idea for them to get their applications in order for November 3, as this is when the software will be commercially release to the public aboard the Nexus 9 tablet.
Interestingly, Google has yet to confirm when the Nexus 6 will be landing. Pre-orders are already open for the Nexus 9 ahead of the now-confirmed November 3 release day, but we know next to nothing about the search giant’s plans for its smartphone counterpart –– both will of course appear in the US first before making their way over to the UK.
Additionally, the Nexus 6 has not yet landed on the Google Play store and we have no idea of pricing either. However, Google has set up an information page which details a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor clocked at 2.7GHz with an Adreno 420 GPU. The display is listed with a 5.96in size and a resolution at 2560x1440 pixels at 493 pixels-per-inch (ppi). A front-facing secondary camera is rated at 2MP and storage options for the phone include 32GB and 64GB models.

Comes With Waterproofing

When the new Nexus products were announced, Google didn’t push the water resistant technology inside the Nexus 6. None of the marketing material from the big G explained whether it would be water or dust resistant, so we here at KYM assumed it didn’t.
Now we’ve heard directly from Motorola that the device does in fact have water resistant protection. Under the “Water Resistance” section on Motorola’s product page it says “Yes” but doesn’t give us what level of liquid it can handle.
Motorola’s Moto X 2014 comes with water-repellent coating that means it can handle a slight amount of splash damage but not full-on immersion. For now we’ll assume the same is the case for the Nexus 6 until we can test it out.

Nexus 6 - Our First Thoughts

Sadly we haven’t managed to get our stubby fingers on the Nexus 6 just yet, but we still thought we’d share some of our first thoughts on the phablet since the announcement.
First up is the big talking point…A PHABLET?! You have to question why Google and Motorola decided to create a phablet with the Nexus 6. The Nexus 5 was, what we here at KYM think anyway, the optimum size for a smartphone. It hosted a 4.7in display with very little bezel, we honestly had our fingers crossed for a similar size, maybe a bump up to a 5in display.
Under the hood is looking nice and strong, a Snapdragon 805 chipset with 3GB of RAM should be able to handle any tasks you want your smartphone to do.
The battery size is also looking quite hefty at 3220mAh but with a 5.9in display it’ll need to be that big. Overall our biggest gripe comes down to the size of the display but we really can’t judge that properly until we hold it in our hands.

Nexus 6 Pricing & Release Date

Google’s Nexus 6 will be available to pre-order soon and rumours suggest it’ll be available the world over by the end of October. According to a Google Play listing on the US store you’ll be able to pre-order the Nexus 6 on October 29 ready for it to be shipped on November 3.
If you head on to the UK Google Play Store you’ll be able to sign up for an update on when pre-orders will go live but there’s no word on an official pre-order date. That suggests it may be coming a little later on this side of the pond, we’ll keep our eyes peeled for a pre-order date over the coming days.
As for pricing details it’ll cost $649 in North America for a SIM-free handset. Before tax and VAT in the UK that comes to about £410 so we can expect it to cost a little over £460 in the UK.
It is also expected the handset will be available on contract through various networks although none have confirmed availability just yet.
Following the Nexus 6 announcement, Motorola has released a statement about its involvement in the phone's production:
"At Motorola we’ve been big believers in Android since the very beginning. We love its power, its flexibility, and how it gives you the freedom to choose the experience that’s right for you. In fact, the only thing that would be better than Android is...more Android. That’s why we’re so excited to have been able to work with Google’s Android team to bring you the new Nexus 6, featuring Android 5.0 Lollipop.
"With Nexus 6, we’ve worked with Google to bring you a bigger phone with more everything. More screen. More speed. More power. And, it’s the best Android experience ever."
