Apple iPhone 6 vs. Samsung Galaxy S5 : TechiBuddy Blog

iPhone 6
After nearly a year of leaks and rumors, Apple has finally made things official: Big phones are here to stay, and Apple is joining the party. Like last year, Apple unveiled two new iPhones this year, but this year's iPhone 6 and 6 Plus sport a complete redesign, including bigger 4.7- and 5.5-inch displays, respectively. It's a tacit acknowledgement that Apple needed to make radical changes to keep pace with advances on the Android side of the fence. So how does the Apple iPhone 6 compare with the de facto Android king, the Samsung Galaxy S5? Read on for a side-by-side comparison.
Though the iPhone 6 has a significantly larger screen than its predecessor, it's still relatively small compared with the Galaxy S5. The iPhone 6 features a 4.7-inch 1,334-by-750-pixel LCD compared with the S5's 5.1-inch 1,920-by-1,080-pixel Super AMOLED display. That's 326ppi to the S5's 432ppi, for those keeping count. We can't speak to display quality yet, but with Apple's track record and all the accolades heaped onto the S5's display, this is a prizefight worth watching.

At 5.42 by 2.64 by 0.28 inches (HWD) and 3.99 ounces, the iPhone 6 is also significantly more compact than the Galaxy S5 (5.59 by 2.85 by 0.32 inches and 5.11 ounces). It's also crafted entirely from anodized aluminum, whereas the S5 is made entirely from plastic. As far as style goes, it's safe to say Apple still trumps Samsung here.
Apple unveiled a new 8-megapixel iSight camera with improved optics and larger pixels. The Galaxy S5's sensor packs in twice the resolution (16 megapixels), but as anyone will tell you, megapixels aren't everything here. Since the old iPhone 5s still manages to beat out the Galaxy S5's camera in some shootouts, any further improvement from Apple doesn't bode well for Samsung.

Going further, the one-to-one comparisons don't hold up quite as well. Apple uses a custom 64-bit A8 chip, while Samsung uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 801 SoC. It's, well, apples to oranges here, especially once you factor in the vast differences between iOS and Android. We know the S5 is still blazing fast, and it's safe to assume that Apple's A8 will be a chip with which to contend.
Apple was obstinate in the face of market forces for years, but with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, it appears ready to admit that people want bigger phones. Samsung had a healthy head start, and it certainly has a winner in the Galaxy S5. We're not calling this one until we get the new iPhones into our labs. But what do you think? Will the iPhone 6 sway you away from Android allegiance? Think the iPhone 6 is as boring as ever? Let us know in the comments below, but please keep it civil.
